What the hell?
So if I buy a physical book from Amazon, no tax. But when I buy an e-book, sales tax. How does that make any sense?

Were you using your work computer? If your work computer uses a network routed through another state, Amazon may be picking up that location and charging you that state's tax. It uses your home address for your physical book shipments.
Otherwise I got nothing.
