Sunday Trade: Usagi Yojimbo

Usagi Yojimbo: Grasscutter II Journey to Atsuta Shrine all by Stan Sakai

Collecting issues 39-45 of Sakai's masterful and award winning series about a ronin rabbit. In this one Usagi and his allies need to get the legendary sword Grasscutter to Atsuta Shrine, where no one will attempt to steal it. 'Cause that would anger the gods. Of course they've got to get past hordes of ninjas to do it...

This volume has Gen the ronin/bounty-hunter rhino, the Neko and Komori ninja clans, samurai turned shinto monk Sanshobo and samurai lord turned farmer Ikeda. Its filled to the brim with deadly battles and has easily one of the Top 10 of Bad-Ass Deaths...

There are some who would dismiss Usagi Yojimbo as "just another funny animal book". We call those people fools...

You know, I always ignored it because I thought it was just a Ninja Turtles spin-off, but hearing you talk about it makes me think it deserves a look. You should live in New England so I can borrow your copies.

Thanks to time travel magic, there is a trade with the Turtles in it. But yeah, Sakai came up with it independent of Eastman/Laird as far as I know...

The Turtles are in it as part of the ongoing storyline? Or as one of many stories told, capitalizing on their success? And is it the Turtles as when they kicked ass or when they got co-opted by children's standards?

A mystic being hunted by ninjas summons help, getting the turtles from their world to Usagi's world. Something similar happened to allow Usagi to meet Leo in a TMNT issue I think...

And this is old-school Eastman/Laird Turtles...

Its in the "Shades of Death" trade

It was a one time thing.
