Writing/Art/Etc by J. O'Barr
I'm sure most of you are familiar with the movie version. Eric Draven and his girl Shelly are attacked. Shelly gets raped and killed. Eric gets killed and then returns as a vengeful, unstoppable revenant. Killer soundtrack. Goth imagery reinforced by the fact that Brendan Lee was killed during filming by an accident with a prop weapon. The original comic version is much darker. I don't just mean the black & white art with its heavy inks and shadows. The mixed race gang behind the murders doesn't even have a reason for what they do as in the movie. Fun Boy the Junkie is a hell of a lot more nihilistic than the movie version. The comic also manages to keep the supernatural elements much more ambiguous. But the heart of the story remains the same. Sorrow over lost potential and dark, brutal Goth vengeance...
